Can you register for GST at a virtual office?

When a virtual office can serve as your principal or additional place of business, and the limits you should know before relying on one.

The short answer

Often, yes. GST registration needs a place of business in the state, supported by proof of your right to use it. A virtual office agreement with the premises owner's NOC and a utility bill is commonly used for this. The GST officer decides each application, though, and may order a physical verification.

Principal vs additional place of business

Your principal place of business is the main address for your registration in a state. An additional place of business is another location in the same state, added to that registration. If you are not yet registered in a state, you usually need a new registration there.

When a virtual office may not be suitable

  • You store goods at the location. A declared warehouse is generally required.
  • Your activity needs a licence tied to specific premises.
  • You cannot be reached at the address for verification or correspondence.
